The Story from Pedicab-Driver Duncan:
This past June I took a pedicab ride with my partner from Brooklyn, into the city. While we walked the pedicab on the Manhattan Bridge we got passed by a cyclist who turned out to be an attorney for the DCA (Department of Consumer Affairs) . This individual decided to take secret camera phone pictures of us on the bridge, and the pedicab, and to send these photo's to a NYPD detective.
The result was a very hefty unlawful ticket sent to my good friend, and pedicab distributor. Beyond that, the DCA is now trying to use this case as a vehicle (no pun intended) to not allow any pedicab
usage on bridges between Boroughs whatsoever!!!!
This would be a huge blow to our industry, and an insult to pedicab drivers throughout the city.

PLEASE, if you can, come celebrate pedal power, and help us raise the funds to pay for the legal fees necessary to win this case...and keep pedicab drivers free to walk our vehicle's between boroughs.

Josephine Baker Day!

In 1951 the NAACP named May 20th Josephine Baker Day to honor her efforts to fight racism. Along with being an amazing and sensational performer, she also adopted many children from around the world, forming a family she called her "Rainbow Tribe." She also lived in a castle, by the way, called Chateau des Milandes.
I urge you all to look her up, be inspired by her, watch her films, and know that if you catch me on Saturday night you shall see me in my second of a series of costume homages to the great Josephine. (pictures coming soon...)
Lady Baker once said, “The things we truly love stay with us always, locked in our hearts as long as life remains.”

We have just completed our new short film, brought to you by Theater of the Magical Reel. We made up the story last spring during one of our Fairytale Experiment "playshops" through improv and partly inspired by a drawing exercise we did of characters (one drawing was of a fairy with huge metrocards for wings). We shot this all in one hilarious afternoon, with many obstacles including the rain, failing camera batteries, location changes, and still came out with something that certainly makes us smile -- we hope it makes you smile too!

The Tibetan Book of the Dead for Reading Aloud is famed playwright Jean Claude van Itallie’s poetic adaptation of the traditional Tibetan Book of the Dead, including passages used to aid and comfort at the time of death.

Each week, members of The Dharma Players will perform various aspects of the Tibetan Book of the Dead for Reading Aloud. Each fifteen minute vignette will illuminate the traditional text in provocative and intriguing ways, offering visitors a theatrical introduction to the works of art exhibited in Bardo: The Tibetan Art of Death. Following each performance, visitors can further explore the Bardo exhibition with museum guides.

Bardo: The Tibetan Art of the Afterlife

February 12, 2010–September 6, 2010

The transitional states between death and either the attainment of spiritual enlightenment or the return to the cycle of rebirth are explored in Bardo: The Tibetan Art of the Afterlife. For centuries Tantric Buddhism has used tools that aid in the preparation for the hallucinatory visions that appear in the afterlife. Only by recognizing these visions as illusory can buddhahood be attained.

Happy New and the magic of 2010

We brought in the new year in a cream colored corset and an oversized vintage suit, a grey felted stingy fedora... The only thing missing was a bowtie and a very short and fat cigar to make the backstage persona for the Shanghai Mermaid complete. All the acts were wonderful as always, but a new jem of discovery is the burlesque performer of New Orleans (our home away from home) Perle Noir. Her first number, shimmering and ecstatic in gold with an amazing feathered headdress, was enough to make even this brave and debaucherous soul feel faint. Another precious highlight, getting to hear the lovely Juliette sing a few numbers, a treat you don't get every time.

The first is a day for recovery, for sleep and classic cinema curled up with whatever pets you can find, lost in a stupor of coffee, last night's champagne, and reflections of the year past and the year to come. However the second is a day to have a "brunch for dinner" party, beyond "breakfast all day" which is genius on its own, the "Brunch for Dinner" party is a C.Spot invention wherein dear friends come over for the greatest meal of this fair city, and enjoy it starting at about 7pm or so... Perfect if you party till 7am...

Sunday was another treat to start it off right. We go to Bembe and hear one of our favorite bands, The Mumbles, featuring La Mer. The music is so good and we are all together and we think of Solange with love and less bitterness to the loss, we just honor her, and love everyone around us in her honor.

Art in DUMBO?

Is there art in DUMBO anymore? The once flourishing bohemian, now flourishing yuppie neighborhood just over the river in Brooklyn holds its 12th annual Arts Under the Bridge festival this weekend.

The festival has always been an elaborate affair. The whole neighborhood explodes in often large scale public installations, concerts, and performance art, and almost all the artists open their studios to the public to show and talk about their work. In past years. the festival has served as a focal community gathering and weekend-long party with a minority of tourists, but some would say the changing face of the neighborhood has pretty much conquered the old spirit.

“I don’t go out during that weekend anymore. I hide. It used to be mostly artists showing and selling their original work that was made upstairs. Now it’s sock stands for the tourists and the folks who used to bring their art from around the corner are bringing it from Bushwick and Bed-Stuy,” carps Jon Goldstein, owner of Vinegar Hill Studios, one of the oldest businesses in the neighborhood, and a long-time resident.

It’s true. The streets are more flooded with people carrying maps, wearing fannypacks and toting huge cameras. The exhibit on the walls of local watering hole 68 Jay Street is photos of artists in their studios, many of whom used to be DUMBO-based but now can’t afford to live or work here. The musical acts are also missing from this year’s festival, apparently the formerly local musicians who used to play for people they mostly knew for free aren’t into it anymore.

However pockets of the old times still remain, and the weekend-long party of this formerly small town type neighborhood is still going on, just a bit more indoors. And some oldtimers still keep the spirit alive. Artist Charlotte Gaspard keeps it real. “Hey, that’s what the arts fest is about, going around to the studios, seeing your friends, being in the neighborhood.”

New Years Dreaming

This was the New Years Dream. The party was sheer madness, but despite the chaos and the hundreds and hundreds of strangers and friends trashing our home and studio and living workspace, the moment of looking up onto the stage set up where our kitchen once was, and seeing Hungry March Band banging away in all their glory -- completely priceless way to bring in the new year. What a great crew of people, I'm a lucky little girl to know such talented and inspiring peoples...

Ladies In Paradise

Lalo sends me some pix of her and the Andi Bird in our paradise and I miss them and that land so much it hurts. Here in the winter of NYC and the cold of commuting and the rut of routine, I know the sun will rise eventually and warm our chapped skin, my lover's arm reminds me of this imminent ray of hope on the horizon, but I still want to run away to SouthEast Asia every winter and then come back again for the First Warm Night...

Winter is unreality for me in some way. Winter I long to hybernate, and dressing and undressing (two of my favorite pasttimes) lose their flavor and fascination and fun, I am left layering upon layering without the passion and joy of wardrobe and driven by necessity foremost... Ugh. The only joy is fleece and flannel, robes of some futuristic ninja druid, the second skin of cut and torn sock and stocking bits stretched over any exposed flesh, but I had almost rather to have worn my bed, attached with a few bunji chords and on wheels like a woman in a coma.

But one day (we have mused on this before in pillow talk or on the far side of the night) perhaps we will live on a houseboat... an island? And I still keep dreaming of {warm} whatever and wherever that may truly be.

Another of my long-time house-building fantasies is the recycled materials building project... This is why people like Olle Lundberg with his recycled ferry house-boat and Reishee Sowa of Puerto Aventuras, Mexico with his recycled materials sustainable island paradise have become my heroes...

The non-profit Public Architecture had some of their people build this. Every element is some kind of recycled.

Go straight from work in my monkey suit to the Antimart opening in Bushwick and despite the fact that I felt as though my eyeballs were going to fall out of my head at any moment, it was such an honor to be there and feel my heart overflow with pride in the Antimart crew for all their amazing work... Brooklyn just got even better!

Dream Home

This reminds me of an installation Andi Bird did years ago with massive quatities of string and broken glass and bare feet and homosote (is that how you spell that?). Much of my mind these daze as it turns cold in this city is turning to daydreams of building green dream homes in warm corners of the earth using sustainable architecture and bare hands.

Work on Saturday

It is never cool when you have to work on a Saturday, especially early in the morning. I remember the years of Saturdays as market days, packing up the battered Bobby Sue the Subaru, filling her to the brim with fashion and mannequin parts and the old tent with the clouds that Andi Bird painted, and all those endless folding racks...

Today I feel vague and sip my coffee (creamed & sugared) and enjoy the taste of last night in my mind. Despite the drama in my crowded subway car between the atrociously rude and confrontational woman and her side-kick, the all-out yelling and cursing match that ensues. Eventually at my home base stop the scene involves a cop and some MTA police briefly. At this point I see a neighborhood friend with her beautiful man-cub who needs momma to carry him after such a trying day, and I abandon the drama makers. I offer to carry her back pack but she's a strong lady and only lets me walk her home in the dusk as she bears the weight of the child and their baggage. But Divine won't let me kiss his cheek goodbye. Maybe next time.

Then I head over to the studio tower to find my friends' holiday designer sale. Miss Saudia my designer/performer belle gives me a lovely pair of earrings, one of which I wear in my one pierced ear, the other I pocket to give to Digitelle as a present. And mama Cara's birthday gift is a huge gorgeous transparent heart, she ties it around my neck with a rubber chord and it rests perfectly on my breast plate, like all things she gives me. I also am fawned over by the beloved posse; Taj literally jumping and licking at me desperately, Flower keeping underfoot or nearby, and TenBucks mostly sulking but finally saying hello.

New Designer with the label Barbarian, and I speak with her for quite a while it seems, soaking in the energy of just starting out, the joy and excitement for her. Her dresses especially are truly beautiful, hand-painted silk... And I hope to myself that perhaps in some way I can help, one day soon or far away, and I can watch this flower grow...

Stop at DumbA next, the home away from home that I haven't frequented frequently at all as of late. It still feels like home, especially to embrace my Star Theory, to see the girls all so pretty laid out in the main room in the dark editing through absolutely gorgeous photos on the glowing screen of a Mac powerbook. We eat candy and then I need to go get home for my Final Cut Pro lesson with my little Paper Tiger. But we never get to the lesson.

Back at home in the crime lab. Next thing we all know the six of us have been sitting around for hours discussing ins and outs of so much of what's important, but mostly lingering on the matter of collective organization and systems for group processes. The night is beyond fun and I finally drag myself to bed far later than I should, but so filled with thought and hope and ideas and joy at the company I have access to. I thank the universe for each moment. Even this one, sucking down coffee and wishing I were laying warm and cozy, asleep in my lovers arms...

On the road, dusk or dawn... Something like that... And I actually like Thanksgiving. I like eating feasts with relatives and somewhat relatives and the simplicity of a meal shared, and the name, meaning lets give thanks, for anything for whatever. It seems to me its a rare thing to remember, that in every moment there is something to be thankful for and we should celebrate all these little momentous moments. I am thankful for art and for love and for friendship, and for the city of concrete and steel and breaking glass contraptions. And I am thankful to escape it all in this moment to the trees and the sudden expanses of sky I almost forgot...

We're afraid of mediocrity and stay awake late day dreaming and working on our own private projects, the things we can stay alive for. Phones keep ringing off the hook today while doctors discuss borderline personality disorder in the other room but in the booth at the top of the auditorium I am safe enough.

I read through an old project last night, wading through 90 minutes of pages I haven't laid eyes on in 9 months, about as long as I have loved my love. The experience is somewhat exciting, whenever there is the possibility of something one can smile. But then one has to go to bed.
